Johnny Cueto made his KC Royals home debut and made it a good one, as the Royals beat Detroit, 4-0. Every inning Cueto walked off the field at Kauffman Stadium, the fans gave him a standing ovation.
In a rematch of last week’s 2-1 loss, the Royals jumped on Tigers rookie Matt Boyd in the first. Alcides Escobar and Ben Zobrist hit back-to-back singles to get the inning started.
Lorenzo Cain followed with a two-run double. After Eric Hosmer struck out, Kendrys Morales drove in LoCain with a single.
Boyd settled down from there, but it was a little too late.
Cueto showed why the Royals made the trading deadline deal for him.
He struck out three of the first four batters he faced. JD Martinez doubled off him with one out in the second, but Cueto retired ten in a row before allowing a two out Jefry Marte single in the fifth. Cueto allowed a single in the sixth and then a single to leadoff the eighth by Marte.
Cueto received a HUGE ovation when he took the mound in the ninth. With the crowd on their feet for the entire inning, Cueto got a line out, struck out Ian Kinsler, and got Victor Martinez to fly out to right field to end the game.
Cueto’s final line: 9IP, 4H, 0R, 0BB, 8K.
