August 7th Minors Recap

It was a light night on the KC Royals minor league front, as two of the four full season affiliates had Monday off.

omahaTriple-A Omaha won their series opener at Memphis, 8-4. A five-run top of the sixth put the Storm Chasers in the lead for good.

Seven Omaha players collected two hits. Frank Schwindel hit two doubles. Jorge Soler drove in four runs. Corey Toups, playing shortstop for just the eighth time this season, drove in two runs. Catcher Brayan Pena drove in a run and stole his first base.

Andres Machado, just called back up from Double-A, made the start and allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out four. Machado allowed a solo home run to the last batter he faced in the 4th inning.

Pedro Fernandez earned the win in relief, as he allowed a run on three hits and a walk over 3.1 innings. He struck out two. Kyle Zimmer allowed a run on two hits while striking out four over two innings of relief.

Double-A NW Arkansas enjoyed Monday off. The Naturals begin a six-game homestand on Tuesday night, starting with Midland.

*In roster news, the Naturals will be getting infielder Jack Lopez back, as he was sent down from Triple-A.

High-A Wilmington headed out to Down East on their day off, as they begin a six-game road trip Tuesday night, starting at the Wood Ducks.

*With the possibility of losing second baseman DJ Burt for the rest of the season (he was having x-rays on his hand in KC), maybe the Blue Rocks will be getting an infielder from NWA?

legends logoLow-A Lexington lost their series opener in Asheville, 7-0, though rain forced an early completion (the Legends had two on and two outs in the 8th inning).

The Legends collected eight hits, but went just 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position. Emmanuel Rivera went 3-for-4 with two doubles (he has 23 this season), though he committed his 17th error at third base. Meibrys Viloria and Vance Vizcaino each had two hits in the loss.

Legends starter Nolan Watson dropped to 1-8, as he allowed six runs (five earned) on 11 hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out three. Arnaldo Hernandez allowed an inherited run in the fifth, along with a solo home run in the seventh (2.1IP, H, R, 0BB, 4K).

*Shortstop Angelo Castellano was replaced on defense in the 3rd inning after an infield grounder to him. Max Bartlett, just added back to the roster, replaced him.

About Jen Nevius

I first became a KC Royals fan way back in 1995 when I attended my first Wilmington Blue Rocks game. I fell in love with minor league baseball then and began following the Royals as former Blue Rocks clawed their way to the big leagues. 3+ years ago I started covering the Royals for Aerys Sports, but since the site has been shut down, I am going out on my own.
