In a must-win game for both teamS, the Dominican Republic beat Venezuela, 3-0 in second round action in San Diego of the World Baseball Classic.
It was a pitchers’ duel early on, as former KC Royal Edinson Volquez and Jhoulys Chacin matched zero for zero.
In the top of the fifth, Venezuela had runners on the corners with one out to chase Volquez from the game. In came Fernando Abad, who induced an inning ending double play.
In the bottom of the fifth, Gregory Polanco gave the DR the lead with a solo home run. The DR tacked on a run in the seventh on a Robinson Cano two out single. Nelson Cruz added a solo homer in the eighth.
Venezuela strung together back-to-back two out hits in the ninth against Jeurys Familia (after he struck out the first two batters of the inning). However, Familia struck out Alcides Escobar to end the game (1-for-3, 2K, sac, CS).
Venezuela dropped to 0-2 with one game remaining. That will be against Puerto Rico on Saturday afternoon (3:30pm ET). The DR faceS Team USA Saturday night (10pm ET).
Tonight, Team USA will try to hand Puerto Rico its first loss in this WBC (10pm ET). Marcus Stroman will face off against Seth Lugo.
