Royals come back to beat Giants

The KC Royals were down 3-1 heading into the top of the seventh and scored single runs over the final three innings to beat the host SF Giants, 4-3.

az-spring-training_1In the 7th inning Peter O’Brien led off with a double and was pinch run for by Bubba Starling. With two outs, Starling came around to score on Raul Mondesi‘ ground-rule double  (he had two hits from the leadoff spot).

In the 8th inning, Hunter Dozier homered to tie the game at 3-3. In the top of the ninth, Starling led off with a single and moved to third base on Whit Merrifield‘s single. He then scored on a Zane Evans fielder’s choice.

That made a winner of reliever Kevin McCarthy, who got a pop up and struck out the next two batters for a perfect 8th inning. Malcom Culver picked up the save by inducing three ground outs around a single to close out the game.

Lefty Danny Duffy got the start and allowed two runs on four hits over three innings. He struck out three. Both runs scored in the 3rd inning on a two out, two-run single from Buster Posey (who may be his battery mate this week with Team USA in the World Baseball Classic).

Joakim Soria followed and allowed a two out, solo homer in the third. Lefty Matt Strahm allowed one hit in his three scoreless innings. He struck out one and induced four ground outs.

*Next up, the Royals host Arizona tomorrow afternoon. New closer Kelvin Herrera is expected to make his spring debut. I would expect Nate Karns to get the start.

About Jen Nevius

I first became a KC Royals fan way back in 1995 when I attended my first Wilmington Blue Rocks game. I fell in love with minor league baseball then and began following the Royals as former Blue Rocks clawed their way to the big leagues. 3+ years ago I started covering the Royals for Aerys Sports, but since the site has been shut down, I am going out on my own.
