The Clemente League best-of-nine finals kicked off on Saturday. The series between Caguas and Santurce is tied at one game a piece heading into today’s off day.
Caguas took Game 1, 1-0. They scored the lone run in the first inning. Jack Lopez started at shortstop and batted ninth for Caguas, going 1-for-3 with a sacrifice.
Santurce took the second game by a 6-3 score. They scored five runs in the seventh.
Jake Newberry took the loss, as he did not record an out in the 7th inning (0IP, 3H, 4R, BB, 0K). He left with the bases loaded and all three runs scored. Lopez went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the loss.
There are now just two more days of the round robin format of the Dominican Winter League playoffs. The standings going into the final two days are as follows:
- Aguilas 12-4
- Gigantes 8-8
- Licey 7-8
- Escogido 5-11
*Remember Aguilas already clinched a spot in the DWL Finals and clinched home-field advantage.
On Saturday, Gigantes moved into second place by beating Aguilas in a doubleheader. Malcom Culver took the loss in one of the games, despite stranding a runner in the fifth (1.1IP, 5H, 3R, 0BB, 2K). In the sixth, he allowed three runs on five hits. Two of those runs scored on a two out, home run. Newly signed KC Royal Al Alburquerque pitched in relief for Aguilas. He stranded a runner in the sixth, but left with the bases loaded in the eighth (1IP, 2H, 0R, BB, K).
Miguel Almonte started one of the games for Gigantes. He allowed three hits and walked one over 2.2 scoreless innings. He struck out four.
Free agent Angel Franco started both games for Aguilas at third base and went a combined 2-for-7 with a walk and a strikeout.
In the other game, Licey beat Escogido, 11-1.
On Sunday, Aguilas beat Escogido, 8-0. Franco hit a two out, grand slam in the 3rd inning (2-for-5).
In the other game, Gigantes beat Licey, 10-6 by scoring six runs in the bottom of the 8th inning. Lefty Tim Hill earned his fourth hold of the postseason for Licey. He entered with the bases loaded and hit a batter, but then retired the next two batters in the fifth (1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 0K).
Game 3 was played last night in the Venezuela Winter League semifinals.
Lara beat La Guaira, 9-3 to take a 2-1 series lead. In the win, centerfielder Paulo Orlando went 2-for-5 with a triple, a run scored, and three RBIs.
In the loss, shortstop Alcides Escobar went 1-for-3.
In the other semifinal, Zulia beat Caribes, 3-2 to take a 2-1 series lead.
