The Clemente League Finals, which begin on Saturday, are now set. Last night, Caguas beat Mayaguez 1-0 in Game 6.
For the second straight game, former KC Royal Ruben Gotay was the hero, as his bases loaded walk with one out in the fourth was the only run driven in. Jack Lopez played shortstop and batted ninth for Caguas, but went 0-for-3 with a strikeout.
Jonathan Sanchez entered in relief for Mayaguez in the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings (H, 0BB, 2K). Gotay collected the hit.
The best-of-nine CL Final begins in Santurce Saturday night.
The semifinals in the Venezuelan Winter League are also now set, as La Guaira beat Aragua in last night’s Wild Card game.
La Guaira scored two runs in the top of the ninth to win 4-2 (the final run scored on a wild pitch). Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar dropped to 7th in the La Guaira lineup and went 2-for-4 with two doubles.
The best-of-seven semis begin tonight, as La Guaira plays Lara and Zulia plays Caribes.
In the continuing round robin portion of the Dominican Winter League playoffs, Aguilas won their tenth game, beating Licey 6-0.
Free agent Angel Franco started at second base and batted eighth. He went 1-for-4. Free agent lefty John Lannan allowed a hit and a walk over three scoreless innings of relief for Licey. He struck out one.
In the other game, Escogido beat Gigantes, 4-2. Now the standings look like this:
