After this afternoon, the KC Royals roster now stands at 39 players.
As expected, the team picked up the options for both closer Wade Davis and shortstop Alcides Escobar. Both will be playing in their final year of their contracts.
They did not pick up the option on Kris Medlen, making him a free agent.
Starter Edinson Volquez and DH Kendrys Morales declined their options, making them free agents. The Royals have until Monday to decide whether or not to offer either or both the qualifying offer of $17.2 million. For a team looking to cut payroll, I would guess that a qualifying offer will not be coming.
The Royals also activated lefties Mike Minor and Tim Collins, along with third baseman Mike Moustakas from the 60-day DL.
There are also rumors that lefty Danny Duffy and the Royals are talking about a contract extension. He is arbitration-eligible and would become a free agent after next season. Duffy, who is spending the offseason in Kansas City, spent yesterday volunteering at a local animal shelter.
