The KC Royals announced this morning that third baseman Mike Moustakas has been activated from the DL.
Moose played two games with Double-A NW Arkansas on a rehab assignment, going 2-for-4 in his first game and 0-for-4 in his second game with two strikeouts.
Prior to landing on the DL with a fractured left thumb, he was hitting .258 with seven home runs and 15 RBIs.
To make room on the roster, the Royals optioned Cheslor Cuthbert to Triple-A. Cuthbert hit .255 with a homer and three RBIs while Moose was on the DL. He was hitting .333 with Omaha at the time of his promotion (top ten in the Pacific Coast League), with four doubles, a triple, and seven home runs in 24 games. He also drove in 28 runs and had an OBP of .402.
Many are speculating that Cuthbert will get time at second base upon his return, though he had split time between first and third base while with the Storm Chasers in their first 24 games. He also played much better defense at the big leagues than when he did in the minors (seven errors in 21 games at third base). I think it’s just a lack of concentration and effort, as he had those issues when he was in Wilmington a few seasons ago (and this spring after being sent back to minor league camp).
