Wang, Gore earn final roster spots

The KC Royals announced their 25-man Opening Day roster a few hours before game time tonight when they take on the NY Mets in a World Series rematch.

Speedster Terrance Gore took the last position player spot, keeping the spot warm for fellow outfielder Jarrod Dyson, who was placed on the 15 day DL and could miss half of April. It will be interesting to see how much pinch running Gore actually does and where the Royals send him when Dyson returns.

Chien-Ming Wang earned the final pitcher spot after a very solid spring training. To be added to the 40-man roster, lefty Tim Collins was placed on the 60 day DL. Collins needs a second Tommy John surgery. With the three off days this week, Wang probably won’t see much time (if any) on the mound.

The Royals then reassigned lefties David Huff and John Lannan and utility fielders Cody Decker and Whit Merrifield to minor league camp. Despite an awesome spring, Merrifield was the odd man out. Meaning, those four are heading to Omaha. Decker even tweeted about it when they arrived last night.

Though the Storm Chasers roster has not been revealed yet, the Royals sent the above four, plus infielder Clint Barmes, catcher Tony Cruz, lefty Brian Duensing, right-hander Peter Moylan, and outfielder Travis Snider there from big league camp earlier in the week.

Brooks Pounders tweeted about heading to Omaha yesterday. Lefty Jonathan Dziedzic was not listed on Double-A NW Arkansas’ roster and neither was Luke Farrell, so I assume those two plus Kyle Zimmer and Miguel Almonte will be in the rotation, though Zimmer did not pitch the entire week I was in Surprise. Then there are bullpen guys like Clayton Mortensen, Bruce Kern, Aroni Nina, and Malcom Culver.

The outfield should be some combination of Snider, Brett Eibner, Merrifield, Jorge Bonifacio, and Jose Martinez. Cheslor Cuthbert will man third base with Balbino Fuenmayor and Decker at first base. The middle infield will be Dusty Coleman, Angel Franco, and Barmes.

The catchers should be Cruz and Parker Morin (and maybe Allen de San Miguel). However, anyone of the above could have been cut loose.

I may be missing someone, but I guess I’ll figure it out when the roster is actually announced.

If there is anyone out there reading this who knows where Andy Ferguson is, let me know. He was not listed on ANY of the spring training roster groups for the Royals and I honestly did not see him. So maybe he is hurt?

About Jen Nevius

I first became a KC Royals fan way back in 1995 when I attended my first Wilmington Blue Rocks game. I fell in love with minor league baseball then and began following the Royals as former Blue Rocks clawed their way to the big leagues. 3+ years ago I started covering the Royals for Aerys Sports, but since the site has been shut down, I am going out on my own.
