Germany went 0-2 in the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Mexico, losing this afternoon in the loser’s bracket game versus the Czech Republic. They were run-ruled 15-3 in eight innings.
Today’s game was close until the final two innings when the Czech Republic scored three runs in the seventh and seven runs in the eighth. Former big leaguer (and all-around good guy) Will Ohman faced just one batter with two outs and one runner on in the seventh and walked the only batter he faced. Then the flood gates opened (it was 5-1 at that point).
It was a rough two games for KC Royals minor leaguer Dominique Taylor. He started both games for Germany in center field and batted second.
In his first at-bat this afternoon, he executed a perfect hit-and-run with a single into the second base hole, sending the base runner to third. This led to the game’s first run. However, that was Taylor’s only hit over the course of the two games, as he struck out swinging in his final two at-bats (the first strikeout came with runners on the corners in the third).
Taylor also struggled a bit in the field today, dropping a sac fly in the third that led to three unearned runs (Germany was leading 1-0). It occurred at the 46:53 mark.
Overall, Taylor went just 1-for-8.
The one player that impressed in every at-bat was Oakland A’s minor league catcher Bruce Maxwell. He had been impressing in big league camp and only showed off his talents over the last two days.
Maxwell caught all 18 innings (despite the score today). He went 3-for-4 yesterday with a walk and a three-run home run to dead center (he is a left-handed hitter). Today, he once again put the ball in play in every at-bat.
He grounded into a sharp double play up the middle in the sixth (with a run scoring). He hit two balls to the wall in left field, one was caught on a nice running play, while the other resulted in an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth.
For the Czech Republic, former journeyman Mike Cervenak went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs, and three runs scored. He also played a nice first base. They will play the loser of tonight’s winner’s bracket game between host Mexico and Nicaragua Saturday night.
In Panama, France eliminated Spain today, winning 5-3. France will play the loser of tonight’s winner’s bracket game between host Panama and Columbia. Royals minor leaguer Mauricio Ramos is once again starting for Columbia at third base and batting fifth.
