Winter League Week 16 Recap: Playoff Edition

All four Caribbean winter leagues have reached the finals portion of their postseason. The four winners (plus Cuba) will face off in the Caribbean Series beginning February 1st.

dominican_winter_league_logoLet’s start in the Dominican Winter League, where the finals is a best-of-nine series between Licey and Escogido.

Licey was hot (winning 12 straight), but then went ice cold, losing eight straight to go down 4-0 to Escogido. Licey stayed alive on Sunday, winning 7-6 in walk off fashion (scoring on an error).

Escogido had walked off on Saturday night, via former KC Royal Pedro Ciriaco‘s two out RBI single, scoring fellow former Royal Jimmy Paredes.

Game 6 will be Tuesday night.

Over in the Clemente League, Mayaguez leads the best-of-seven series over Santurce, 2-1. Game 4 will be Tuesday night.

Reymond Fuentes has started in centerfield and batted third for Santurce so far in the finals. He has gone 3-for-12 with a run scored and three strikeouts. He also committed an error in Sunday’s 1-0 loss.

In the Venezuelan Winter League, Magallanes leads the best-of-seven series 2-1 over Aragua. In the last two games, the winning team won 5-4 in extra innings.

Game 4 will be held tonight.

Finally in the Mexican Pacific League, where Maztlan leads Mexicali in the best-of-seven series, 3-1. They can clinch the championship tonight.

I know Alex Liddi signed with Baltimore, but he is now playing for Mexicali in the MPL Championship. While playing right field, Liddi has gone 3-for-15 with a walk, two runs scored, and five strikeouts.

*Tomorrow I will give the final update on the Australian Baseball League.

About Jen Nevius

I first became a KC Royals fan way back in 1995 when I attended my first Wilmington Blue Rocks game. I fell in love with minor league baseball then and began following the Royals as former Blue Rocks clawed their way to the big leagues. 3+ years ago I started covering the Royals for Aerys Sports, but since the site has been shut down, I am going out on my own.
