Winter League Week 14 Recap: Playoff Edition

This week, I decided to split up the Week 14 winter league recap and just cover the playoffs today and give you the latest from the Australian Baseball League tomorrow.

So let’s get started.

dominican_winter_league_logoThe Dominican Winter League continues their round robin format, where Licey has already clinched a spot in the semifinals with six games to go (18 total). After losing their first game of the postseason, Licey has reeled off 11 straight victories.

Toros is in second place at 5-7, while Estrellas and Escogido are both 4-8. Orlando Calixte was back in action for Estrellas over the weekend. He pinch ran in the 7th inning on Saturday, scoring a run. On Sunday, he played both shortstop and second base while batting ninth (he did commit an error). Calixte went 2-for-5 with a double, a walk, and two runs scored.

The Clemente League is also in the midst of their round robin format for the playoffs.

Mayaguez leads 4-2, while both Santurce and Caguas are 2-3.

Reymond Fuentes continues to play centerfield for Santurce, but has mostly batted third in their lineup. He went 3-for-15 with three walks, a run scored, and a stolen base. On Tuesday, Fuentes threw a runner out at second base.

In the Mexican Pacific League, the semifinals are already underway, as Mazatlan faces Obregon and Navojoa faces Mexicali.

Jalisco was eliminated by Mexicali on Tuesday, as they were swept in the best-of-seven series. In the final two games of the series, Alex Liddi played first base and went 2-for-8 with two runs scored and a 9th inning two-run home run.

However, Liddi’s season is not quite over. He has joined Obregon, where he went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and a stolen base in Sunday’s first game of the semis (a 4-1 victory).

Reliever Brian Broderick pitched in Jalisco’s final game, striking out two in two perfect innings.

venezuelaFinally to the Venezuelan Winter League, where things have gotten a little confusing. There were three first round series, as both Magallanes and La Guaira advanced on Saturday with 3-2 series wins.

On Sunday, Aragua beat Margarita in seven games to give the VWL three remaining playoff teams for the semifinals. However, now Margarita must play Caribes tonight, with the winner moving on to face Magallanes on Tuesday. Aragua will face La Guaira beginning Tuesday.

With La Guaira advancing, that means right fielder Jose Martinez keeps playing. He went 4-for-10 with a three-run home run, a double, and two walks last week.

In tonight’s win or go home game between Caribes and Margarita, you may see Carlos Garcia as a pinch runner or a late game defensive replacement. He pinch ran twice this week, once in the seventh and once in the 11th. On Tuesday (when he pinch ran in the 7th), Garcia stayed in the game to play second base and went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

On Sunday, Garcia entered on defense at second base in the bottom of the eighth.

*As I mentioned in the beginning, I will recap the ABL tomorrow.

About Jen Nevius

I first became a KC Royals fan way back in 1995 when I attended my first Wilmington Blue Rocks game. I fell in love with minor league baseball then and began following the Royals as former Blue Rocks clawed their way to the big leagues. 3+ years ago I started covering the Royals for Aerys Sports, but since the site has been shut down, I am going out on my own.
