The winter league regular seasons have all come to an end (except in Australia).
The playoffs are now set in Venezuela, Puerto Rico (though MLB.com has the Clemente League regular season ending January 4th), and Mexico.
The Mexican Pacific League playoffs begin tomorrow (New Year’s Day) with three first round best-of-seven matchups. Jalisco (which is where KC Royals free agents Alex Liddi and Brian Broderick are playing) will face Mexicali, Los Mochis will face Obregon, and Navojoa will play Mazatlan (where re-signed reliever Benino Pruneda was on the roster).
On Saturday, January 2nd, the round robin playoffs begin in the Clemente League, as the top three teams in the four team league face off. Caguas (21-21) will play Mayaguez (27-15) on Saturday and Mayaguez will play Santurce (21-21) on Sunday.
Outfielder Reymond Fuentes won the batting title, finishing with a .326 average with Santurce.
The Venezuelan Winter League begins their first round playoffs with three series beginning on Saturday. Their regular season ended a day late due to a doubleheader tie breaker played on Wednesday. Caribes beat Caracas to advance and then Caracas beat Lara to advance (and knock out Paulo Orlando and Lara).
So, Caracas will play Magallanes and Caribes will play first half champion La Guaira and Jose Martinez. Margarita (and Carlos Garcia) will then face Aragua.
The Dominican Winter League continues their round robin playoffs, though they will enjoy the New Year’s festivities with two days off and resume play on Saturday.
Licey and Escogido are both 3-1, Toros is 2-2, and regular season champion Estrellas has yet to win (0-4).
No Royals have yet to play in the DWL playoffs.
