Dominican Winter League playoffs begin tonight

The Dominican Winter League is the first of the four Caribbean winter leagues to end their regular season, as their round robin playoffs begin tonight.

dominican_winter_league_logoThe top four in the DWL:  Estrellas, Licey, Escogido, and Toros will play a total of 18 games in round-robin format. The top two records will then play in a best-of-nine championship, with the winner representing the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series.

Estrellas claimed the regular season title, despite having the same record as Licey. Estrellas won the season series against Licey. Former KC Royal Mendy Lopez was the interim manager twice this season for Estrellas, but manager Dean Treanor will return for the postseason.

Tonight, Estrellas will play Toros, while Licey will face off against Escogido.

As of right now, the only Royals minor leaguer participating in the DWL postseason will be infielder Orlando Calixte with Estrellas.

About Jen Nevius

I first became a KC Royals fan way back in 1995 when I attended my first Wilmington Blue Rocks game. I fell in love with minor league baseball then and began following the Royals as former Blue Rocks clawed their way to the big leagues. 3+ years ago I started covering the Royals for Aerys Sports, but since the site has been shut down, I am going out on my own.
