Two of the five major winter leagues began play last week, with the Dominican Winter League set to begin this Thursday.
The Venezuelan Winter League kicked off on Wednesday, with four KC Royals minor leaguers seeing action.
Right-hander Yender Caramo pitched in Magallanes’ opener on Wednesday and allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits over 2/3 of an inning. He allowed a three-run home run. Magallanes is currently 2-3 in the standings.
Outfielder Jose Martinez has taken his hot hitting from the regular season (.384 and the batting champion in the Pacific Coast League) to the VWL. In five games with La Guaira (2-3), Martinez has gone 6-for-15 with a triple and a solo home run (a 3rd inning, two out shot on Saturday). He has walked six times compared to two strikeouts (both coming in Friday’s game).
His teammate in both Omaha and now La Guaira, Buddy Baumann, has pitched in three games so far in the VWL. Overall, he has allowed two runs on three hits over two innings with a strikeout. Baumann took the blown save in his first appearance on Thursday (1.1IP, 2H, R, 0BB, K). He allowed a two out, pinch-hit home run in the 8th inning on Saturday night (which led to the team’s loss). On Sunday, Baumann earned his first hold by getting a ground out from the only batter he faced with one out in the ninth (with the tying run on second base).
Paul Clemens pitched on Friday for La Guaira. He allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out two, but took the loss.
Centerfielder Lane Adams has played in four games for Zulia (1-3), going 5-for-18. His big day came on Sunday afternoon, when he delivered the game winner in the bottom of the 11th inning (3-for-6 with a double and three RBIs). Adams has stolen two bases, but struck out five times.
Jeckson Flores has pinch ran once for Lara (4-1).
The Mexican Pacific League kicked off on Friday.
Brian Broderick, a teammate of Liddi’s with Jalisco, earned the save on Saturday, though it was an eventful one. He allowed a run in the ninth on two hits and a walk. He struck out one (18 pitches, 11 strikes). With the tying run on first base, Broderick struck out former big leaguer Jorge Cantu and induced a ground out to end the game.
Stay tuned next Monday for another winter league recap!
