With the game tied at 4-4 in the eighth inning, NW Arkansas outfielder Jorge Bonifacio took the 2-2 pitch and deposited into the left field grassy area beyond the fence for a two-run home run.
That blast not only earned him the Top Star Award at the Texas League All-Star Game, but also a water dump from Naturals teammates Alex Liddi and JC Sulbaran.
The North Division beat the South, 9-4. They opened the game up in the ninth against former Royal (though brief) Jandel Gustave.
Though Balbino Fuenmayor did not win the HR Derby (host Corpus Christi’s Tyler White did), he had a great night representing the Naturals. Fuenmayor went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and a 9th inning sac fly. He started at first base and formed the formidable 3-4 in the North’s lineup with Bonifacio.
Alex Liddi entered at second base and Terrence Gore entered at left field in the bottom of the fifth. In that inning, the South scored two runs to tie the game at 4-4. Gore contributed, as his throwing error led to a run.
Liddi singled in his first at-bat and also struck out. Gore grounded out in his first at-bat and was hit by a pitch in the ninth. He came around to score on Fuenmayor’s sac fly off Gustave.
Gustave walked three, including Bonifacio with the bases loaded. He hit Gore and allowed a stolen base and an RBI force out.
*Shortstop Raul Mondesi, elected as a reserve, did not play. Neither did elected starter Angel Franco, who has not played in a game since June 2nd.
