Royals drop the first game in St. Louis

The KC Royals and St. Louis Cardinals matched up in the battle of the two best teams in baseball. The Cardinals took the opener, 4-0.

It was just another three inning start for Yordano Ventura, who left with some kind of hand issue. He took the loss, as he allowed two runs on four hits and a walk.

thumb downJoe Blanton was once again called on to save the bullpen. He induced three ground outs in the fourth and struck out two in the fifth (around a walk and a single). After a double by Jason Heyward in the sixth, Blanton induced a ground out before intentionally walking Jon Jay.

That was all for Blanton and in came Franklin Morales, who got Cardinals pitcher Jaime Garcia to ground out to end the inning.

Morales got two quick outs in the seventh before giving up a single to Jhonny Peralta. In came Ryan Madson, who struck out Mark Reynolds to end the inning (on three pitches).

Luke Hochevar struggled again, allowing two runs on a walk, a triple, and a sac fly in the eighth.

On offense, the Royals collected just five hits, all singles. Mike Moustakas collected two of those hits.

About Jen Nevius

I first became a KC Royals fan way back in 1995 when I attended my first Wilmington Blue Rocks game. I fell in love with minor league baseball then and began following the Royals as former Blue Rocks clawed their way to the big leagues. 3+ years ago I started covering the Royals for Aerys Sports, but since the site has been shut down, I am going out on my own.
