Royals take first game over Indians

The KC Royals held on for the 5-3 victory over visiting Cleveland.

The two teams traded home runs in the first inning. Michael Brantley hit a two-run shot off Royals starter Jason Vargas.

The Royals came back with three runs off Indians starter Danny Salazar on Eric Hosmer‘s home run.

From there, the two starters settled down.

Vargas retired eight in a row after the Brantley homer before a walk to leadoff the fourth. Overall, he allowed two runs on two hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out five and threw 50 of his 85 pitches for strikes.

Salazar retired 11 of 12 batters before Jarrod Dyson led off the fifth with a triple. He would score on an Alex Gordon one out single. The Royals tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on Hosmer’s two out triple (off lefty Nick Hagadone).

Ryan Madson relieved Vargas and threw a perfect seventh (two ground outs and a strikeout). Kelvin Herrera allowed a leadoff home run in the eighth to Lonnie Chisenhall before getting out of the inning. Wade Davis earned his sixth save of the season.

*Centerfielder Lorenzo Cain returns from his suspension on Wednesday.

**The Royals have announced that prospect Kyle Zimmer had another setback in trying to return to the mound. His surgically repaired right shoulder still hurts. He was supposed to join Double-A NW Arkansas this weekend. Instead, he will be sticking around Surprise a little longer.

About Jen Nevius

I first became a KC Royals fan way back in 1995 when I attended my first Wilmington Blue Rocks game. I fell in love with minor league baseball then and began following the Royals as former Blue Rocks clawed their way to the big leagues. 3+ years ago I started covering the Royals for Aerys Sports, but since the site has been shut down, I am going out on my own.
