Royals finally announce Opening Day roster

Just before the 3pm ET deadline on Easter Sunday, the KC Royals announced their Opening Day roster.

opening dayFirst, the Royals placed lefty Tim Collins and right-hander Luke Hochevar on the DL.

They then added right-hander Ryan Madson and lefty Franklin Morales to the 40-man roster.

So, the 2015 Royals roster looks like this:

Pitchers: Yordano Ventura, Danny Duffy, Edinson Volquez, Jason Vargas, Jeremy Guthrie, Chris Young, Jason Frasor, Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis, Greg Holland, Madson, and Morales.

Catchers: Salvador Perez and Erik Kratz

Infielders: Eric Hosmer, Kendrys Morales, Omar Infante, Alcides Escobar, Mike Moustakas, and Christian Colon.

Outfielders: Alex Rios, Lorenzo Cain, Alex Gordon, Jarrod Dyson, and Paulo Orlando.

Congrats to Paulo and CC on making their first Opening Day rosters!

It will be interesting to see how Madson is used once the season starts. He hasn’t pitched in back-to-back games yet and hasn’t even pitched every other game either. Missing the Houston series doesn’t help.

Lefty Brian Flynn is headed to Triple-A Omaha. It will be interesting to see how he is used there. He came over from Miami in the offseason as a starter, but was mainly used as a reliever this spring.

Now it will be interesting to see how the Royals minor league rosters fill out, especially with Flynn, Moises Sierra, Whit Merrifield, Ryan Jackson, and Gabriel Noriega headed to the minors.

The three-game series against the Chicago White Sox matches up like this: Yordano Ventura vs Jeff Samardzija tomorrow, Danny Duffy vs Jose Quintana on Wednesday, and Edinson Volquez vs John Danks in Thursday’s finale.

About Jen Nevius

I first became a KC Royals fan way back in 1995 when I attended my first Wilmington Blue Rocks game. I fell in love with minor league baseball then and began following the Royals as former Blue Rocks clawed their way to the big leagues. 3+ years ago I started covering the Royals for Aerys Sports, but since the site has been shut down, I am going out on my own.
