Spring Training Diary: Day 5

Thursday was another hot day in Arizona, though if you could find a spot in the shade to watch a baseball game, it was a good ten degrees cooler.

royals st logoI spent the afternoon on the backfields of Surprise, watching the KC Royals lower levels play the Texas Rangers. It was supposed to be the upper levels, but apparently they change the schedule all the time at the last minute.

I had the chance to watch some players that should end up in Wilmington, to go along with returnees like Jack Lopez, Michael Antonio, Frank Schwindel, and Daniel Rockett.

Cody Reed, the Royals second round pick in 2013, got the start and he struggled in the first. However, he rebounded to pitch four innings.  Cam Gallagher got the start behind the plate and caught the first five innings, as Alec Mills pitched the next four innings.

Dominique Taylor made a nice diving stop in centerfield, making me not miss Bubba Starling too much.

Injured lefty Tim Collins also made an appearance on the backfields.

From the game, I headed down to Scottsdale for some Sprinkles cupcakes and dinner and ice cream at the Sugar Bowl.

The plan for tomorrow is to watch the Royals Double-A and Triple-A teams on the backfields in Peoria, as they play Seattle’s upper levels. Fingers crossed that the schedule doesn’t change because Christian Binford is slated to start (at least that’s what he told me yesterday).

About Jen Nevius

I first became a KC Royals fan way back in 1995 when I attended my first Wilmington Blue Rocks game. I fell in love with minor league baseball then and began following the Royals as former Blue Rocks clawed their way to the big leagues. 3+ years ago I started covering the Royals for Aerys Sports, but since the site has been shut down, I am going out on my own.
