Week 2 of Cactus League games for the KC Royals are complete and the team has not made many cuts in terms of the roster in big league camp. Meaning, they are still getting a good look at the abundance of players in camp.
So let’s take a look at some of the spring training battles that are heating up.
- Left-handed relievers:
Franklin Morales (two appearances): 3IP, 0H, 0R, BB, 3K. He has yet to allow a run this spring and has become the favorite for this spot in the bullpen.
Brandon Finnegan (two appearances): 3IP, 4H, 3R, 2ER, 2BB, 2K, HR. The Royals say they are stretching him out to start, but two innings on Tuesday has been his longest outing to date (just three total outings). Finnegan’s command has been off and his grasp on this spot seems to be slipping.
Brian Flynn (two appearances): 4IP, H, 0R, 0BB, 3K. It was a good week for Flynn, who also continues to impress. He needed just 39 pitches (31 for strikes) total last week.
Buddy Baumann (one appearance): 1IP, H, 0R, 0BB, K
Joe Paterson (one appearance): 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, K
- Right-handed reliever options:
Jandel Gustave (one appearance): 1IP, H, 0R, BB, HBP, K
Louis Coleman (two appearances): 2.2IP, 2H, 2R, 0BB, 5K. He is out of options and remains the favorite for a bullpen spot, especially since no one has really taken a step forward in this competition.
Casey Coleman (one appearance): 1IP, 3H, 2R (2R HR), BB, 0K
Ryan Madson (two appearances): 2IP, 3H, R (0ER), 0BB, 0K
Brian Broderick (one appearance): 2IP, 3H, R, 0BB, K
Aaron Brooks (one start): 2IP, 5H, 4R, 0BB, 4K, 2HR
Yohan Pino, Joe Blanton, and Michael Mariot did not make an appearance for the Royals last week.
- Backup catcher:
Erik Kratz (three games, one start): 0-for-7 with a strikeout. He also had a passed ball on Tuesday.
Francisco Pena (three games, one start): 1-for-5 with an RBI and a strikeout. He also committed an error.
JC Boscan (two games): 0-for-3, GIDP

Gabriel Noriega (three games at shortstop, one start): 0-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored, and two strikeouts.
Orlando Calixte (five games): 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Pinch ran once. Played third base twice and shortstop and second base once.
Matt Fields (five games, one start at first base): 2-for-10 with two home runs and five RBIs. He also struck out five times.
Cheslor Cuthbert (five games): 2-for-10 with a walk, two runs scored, and a GIDP. He also hit a two-run home run. Played two games each at first and third base and pinch-hit for the DH on Tuesday (pop up).
- Backup outfielder:
Paulo Orlando (four games, one start in centerfield): 3-for-6 with a double, a triple, and five RBIs. Played centerfield in three games and once in left field.
Moises Sierra (four games, one start in right field): 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. He also grounded into a double play and committed an error. Played right field in two games, once in left field, and pinch-hit for the DH (HBP).
Reymond Fuentes (three games, one start in left field): 1-for-6 with a run scored and three strikeouts. Played left field twice and once in centerfield.
Terrance Gore (three games, two in left field): 0-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, and a strikeout. He pinch ran on March 13th and stole his first spring training base.
