The position battles: one week in

The KC Royals have played a full week of Cactus League spring training games and have lost just one. 2015 seems to be no different than recent years for the Royals, dominance in Arizona. Now if it just transferred over to the start of the regular season.

The Royals really do not have many open roster spots for Opening Day, but lets look at how some players battling for spots did the first week of spring training.

  • Potential left-handed reliever options:

Franklin Morales (two appearances): 3IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 4K

Brandon Finnegan (one appearance): 2IP, 3H, 2R, BB, K, WP  (the base runners came in his second inning).

Brian Flynn (three appearances, one start): 4IP, 5H, 2R, BB, 3K, HR

Joe Paterson (three appearances): 3IP, 4H, 2R, 0BB, 3K, 2R HR (allowed yesterday)

Buddy Baumann (three appearances): 3IP, 3H, 0R, BB, K

Scott Alexander (three appearances): 3IP, 5H, 3R, 2ER, 0BB, 0K

Chris Dwyer (two appearances): 2.2 IP, H, 0R, BB, HBP, K

John Lamb (two appearances): 4IP, 6H, R, BB, 3K

  • Right-handed reliever options:

Jandel Gustave (three appearances): 4.1 IP, 3H, R, BB, K

Louis Coleman (three appearances): 4IP, 5H, R, 0BB, 4K

Casey Coleman (two appearances): 2IP, H, R, BB, 0K

Ryan Madson: 1IP, H, R, 0BB, K, solo HR

Michael Mariot (three appearances with three victories): 3.1IP, H, 0R, BB, 2K

Brian Broderick (two appearances): 3IP, 5H, R (0ER), 0BB, 0K

Yohan Pino (three appearances): 4IP, 5H, 2R, BB, 5K, solo HR (allowed yesterday)

Joe Blanton (two appearances, one start): 5IP, 7H, 2R, BB, 2K

Aaron Brooks (two appearances, one start): 3IP, 3H, R, 0BB, 2K, solo HR

 

  • Backup catcher:

Erik Kratz (six games, five starts): 5-for-12 with three doubles, a home run, two walks, four runs scored, and two strikeouts. He has a five game hitting streak.

Francisco Pena (five games, one start as catcher and one as DH): 1-for-11 with an RBI an three strikeouts.

JC Boscan (three games): 2-for-5

 

  • Backup infielder:

Christian Colon (six games, all starts at second base): 3-for-10 with three walks and two RBIs. He was also picked off and committed two errors.

Ryan Roberts (four games, two starts at second base): 4-for-10 with a double, a triple, a walk, three RBIs, and four strikeouts.

Ryan Jackson (six games, two starts at shortstop): 5-for-8 with four walks, three runs scored, and two RBIs. Played four games at shortstop and two at second base.

Gabriel Noriega (six games, one start at shortstop): 5-for-12 with two runs scored and an RBI. Played four games at shortstop and two at second base.

Orlando Calixte (five games, one as DH, three at third base, and one at shortstop): 3-for-8 with a double, a triple, and two runs scored.

Matt Fields (six games, all at first base): 1-for-6 with a walk, a run scored, and three strikeouts.

Cheslor Cuthbert (seven games, one start at third base): 3-for-11 with a double, four RBIs, and a walk. Played third base five times and first base twice.

Whit Merrifield (four games, one start in left field): 3-for-7 with three runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base. Played second base twice and right and left field.

 

  • Backup outfielder:

Paulo Orlando (five games, one start in centerfield): 5-for-12 with a home run, three runs scored, and two RBIs. He did strike out three times.

Moises Sierra (six games, with a start in both left and right field): 3-for-12 with a walk, three runs scored, and two RBIs. He also had an outfield assist from right field.

Reymond Fuentes (five games, two starts in left field): 2-for-9 with a stolen base and two strikeouts. Played two games in centerfield and three in left field.

Terrance Gore (three games, all in left field): 0-for-5 with a walk, a run scored, and two strikeouts.

Lane Adams (four games, three in left field and one in center): 2-for-7 with a run scored and four strikeouts.

Brett Eibner (four games, three starts): 5-for-9 with two doubles, two home runs, and five RBIs. He struck out twice. He played all three outfield positions and was the DH.

 

  • How are the prospects doing?

Miguel Almonte (three appearances): 4IP, 5H, 3R, 0BB, 4K, 3B, solo HR

Christian Binford: 2IP, H, 0R, 0BB, 2K

Raul Mondesi (six games, a start each at second base and shortstop): 4-for-9 with a double, a triple, two walks, a run scored, and an RBI. He struck out twice, was picked off second base by the catcher, and committed an error. Played shortstop three times, second base twice, and was the DH once.

Hunter Dozier (four games, two starts at third base): 1-for-8 with two strikeouts.

Bubba Starling (four games, three in center and one at DH): 0-for-7 with five strikeouts and a hit batter. He was also picked off.

Jorge Bonifacio (four games, two starts in right field): 2-for-7 with a double, three RBIs, and three strikeouts.
