Royals Week 7 Winter League Recap

Another week has gone by, meaning…it’s time for another KC Royals Winter League Weekly Recap!

Let’s start in the Puerto Rican League.

220px-PuertoRicoBaseballLeagueJack Lopez plays for 8-9 Santurce. The second baseman went 5-for-20 in five games. He walked three times and scored two runs. Yesterday, Lopez dropped to second in the order after mainly being the leadoff hitter.

The newest Royal, outfielder Reymond Fuentes (who they acquired from the SD Padres), began play for Santurce yesterday. He went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and a strikeout. He played centerfield and batted seventh.

Moving on to the Dominican Winter League, where there are the most Royals playing winter ball.

Despite pitching a full season in Wilmington and then pitching in the Arizona Fall League, right-hander Miguel Almonte joined the winter ball ranks last week. He made his winter ball debut on Saturday for Gigantes (15-14). In the start, he allowed one run on three hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out five and induced seven ground outs (to two fly outs).

Almonte also has two Royals in his outfield. Carlos Peguero played mostly left field last week, but also saw time in right field and as the DH. He went 3-for-12 with two doubles, nine walks, and three runs scored. Peguero did strike out four times. Yesterday, he walked four times.

Moises Sierra played right field all week for Gigantes. He went 6-for-17 with four, two out RBIs. One of those came on a solo home run. Sierra did strike out four times.

Right-hander Andrew Triggs pitching for Wilmington on June 22, 2013 (Jen Nevius).

There is another new Royal playing in the DWL and that would be right-handed reliever Andrew Triggs. He made his debut yesterday for first place Estrellas (19-10). Although he allowed a run in the top of the ninth (two hits and a walk), he was credited with the win, as the team came back and walked off with four runs in the bottom of the ninth. Triggs allowed an RBI single to Sierra and then intentionally walked Peguero.

Aguilas (16-13) has two Royals on its team. Francisco Pena caught five games last week and had his second throwing error, to go along with a passed ball. He went 3-for-19 with seven strikeouts. Pena did hit one double and scored two runs.

Second baseman Angel Franco played in three games last week for Aguilas. He went 4-for-8 with an RBI and two strikeouts.

*It seems as though first baseman Matt Fields is no longer playing for Estrellas. Over the past week, their new first baseman is veteran Jake Fox (Orlando Calixte has also been absent from the lineup). Lefty Scott Alexander did not pitch last week for Gigantes.

Finally, to the Venezuelan Winter League.

Infielder Johnny Giavotella has begun playing for La Guaira (13-25). His first game was on Saturday, when he was the third baseman and batted eighth. He played third base and batted second on Sunday. In those two games, Gio went 2-for-8 with two runs scored.

Gio then played left field yesterday, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout (batting second).

Lefty Buddy Baumann is back pitching for La Guaira and is pitching just about every day out of their bullpen (he made three appearances). He allowed two runs on four hits and two walks over 3.2 innings. Baumann faced just one batter on Tuesday (a walk in the sixth). On Thursday (his best outing), he allowed a run (after he was pulled in the sixth), while pitching 3.1 innings.

On Sunday, Baumann entered with the bases loaded in the fifth and allowed all three runs to score, along with his own run. He faced three batters: a sac fly, a walk to reload the bases, and a bases clearing double.

Centerfielder Paulo Orlando continues his solid winter ball season while batting third for Lara (18-22). In six games last week, he went 11-for-27 with five RBIs and four runs scored. Orlando hit a solo home run in the ninth on Sunday.

Carlos Garcia played in two games for last place Margarita (12-26). He pinch-hit on Tuesday (a ground out) and started at second base on Saturday. In that game, Garcia went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

I will be on vacation beginning on Black Friday, so there will be no winter league recap for Week 8. I will be back with a two week recap on December 9th (hopefully).

About Jen Nevius

I first became a KC Royals fan way back in 1995 when I attended my first Wilmington Blue Rocks game. I fell in love with minor league baseball then and began following the Royals as former Blue Rocks clawed their way to the big leagues. 3+ years ago I started covering the Royals for Aerys Sports, but since the site has been shut down, I am going out on my own.
